8 Things To Do Before Your Laser Hair Removal Session

So you’ve decided to get laser hair removal! You might be happy to learn that you’re not alone, thousands of other people are using this method to rid themselves of unwanted hair. So how do you prepare for this procedure and what can you expect? I’m here to help.

For optimal results, refrain from going out into the sun for a fortnight before you have laser hair removal. Since the laser works with melanin, your skin’s natural pigmentation or what gave you that glorious sunkissed bronze, it is ideal to be as light as you can.

To be able to achieve optimal results with laser hair removal, make sure that the root of your hair is in the follicle. This means refraining from using tweezers, wax or anything that yanks the hair root for seven or fourteen days, if you’re working on your face or the rest of your body respectively.

This may come as a surprise, but shaving a day or 24 hours prior to your laser hair removal session is actually recommended. Shaving merely cuts the strand, but leaves the root in the follicle. This will allow the energy from the laser to focus on the follicle and not necessarily burning off the hair strand.

If you plan to have a tattoo done in the area where you’ll be having laser hair removal, it would be advisable to postpone it to after you’re done. There may be some skin lightening that will occur due to the laser, and this may affect the quality especially the color intensity of your tattoo. So move the inking a month or two after your last session. This will also give your skin (and your pain centers) time to rest.

You know your body the best so if you have a tendency towards cold sores, ask your doctor to prescribe you antibiotics before your laser hair removal. Even if there is certainty that all equipment and locations will be sterilized for your use.

Pain tolerance not so high? Be assured by that a session of laser hair removal will include an anaesthetic rubbed over the skin. Though you can definitely supplement that with any oral painkiller like an Advil.

For the day of the session, wear clothing that you can get in and out of with ease. Hold off from using any of your body products on the areas which you’ll be working on for the laser hair removal. Thought getting clean using soapy water is still recommended.

When planning to go hair-free, give yourself three months before the day that you plan to bare it all. It is all this preparation and paying attention to precautions that will allow for your laser hair removal to go without a hitch.
