These days, a woman can’t just raise her hands without making sure her underarm is hairless. Smiling just won’t do anymore; she also has to remove any tinge of mustache on her upper lip. And if you believe she wears sleeveless shirts and short skirts on her relaxed days, think once more. Most likely, she didn’t wake up and simply wore those clothes right away without undergoing a hair removal process. She still needed to shave or wax her arms and legs.
While hair removal is very normal for the ladies, some “macho” guys likewise remove their excess hair on the body. While the ladies will not raise an eyebrow upon seeing a hairy man, they likely won’t be anxious to present themselves to him also. Some men understand that hair removal by cutting or getting rid of their facial and body hair is more attractive to women. It can also be that they find being hairless more comfortable and sanitary than being covered with their own hair.
The practice of hair removal is nothing new. It has been present since the ancient civilization period and it is still popular today.
Hair removal comes in several techniques. There is the depilation method, which is getting rid of the hair from above the surface of the skin, or the epilation method, which is the removal of the whole hair, including the roots, from beneath the skin.
In depilating, the most common ways are shaving, trimming, and applying creams that break the protein bonds of the hair, ripping it from above the skin. Some likewise use friction to buff away hair. For those who prefer to epilate, most common methods include plucking, waxing, sugaring, and threading. These techniques, though admittedly not pain-free, take the hair longer time to grow back.
There are also permanent ways of hair removal and reduction. The first is electrolysis, the process of removing the hair by applying electricity to a solid hair-thin metal probe slid into every hair follicle. This does contained damage to the areas that generate hair; thus, permanently removing hair.
A popular method used in hair reduction is laser hair removal. This method applies laser to cause damage in the area that causes hair growth. Another process is the Intense Pulsed Light or IPL, which is sometimes called Flashlamps. This one applies various wavelengths of light to eliminate hair and treat other skin problems, such as hyperpigmentation.
Each method varies on effectiveness, price, convenience, and the length of time the hair grows back. As each has its own advantages and disadvantages, always take extra caution each time you exercise any of the said techniques.
