Ever since we can remember, women in our family always had their eyebrows trimmed and their underarms free of hair. The men, on the other hand, always shaved their beards and infrequently even their heads. I assume this has something to do with our culture which examines body hair on girls as unfeminine. I was curious as to when the practice of shaving and hair removing started so I turned to the most trusted and useful pal of all, Google.com. So it is here that I learned that it started as far back as 30,000 BC. Imagine folks were already vain back then, using flints to trim their hair.
It was also during this time that women began using creams with the goal of ridding themselves of undesired hair on their bodies. The gizmos and techniques evolved through the centuries, continuously getting more refined as men and women became more well informed and started messing with the materials open to them.
Everywhere around the globe, people of different cultures show their likenesses in removing unwished-for body hair but they often differ on the methods so each culture has in many ways contributed in the development of hair removing. Alexander the Great’s obsession with shaving led to the creating of the 1st barber shop in Europe. Ancient Egyptian girls, on the other hand, following Cleopatra’s lead, exploited the sugaring hair removing method.
Threading also came from the Middle East and parts of Far East. In the Americas, the Aztecs were also using razors made of volcanic glass. In 1995, the FDA authorized the 1st laser treatment for use in hair removing. Today, it is widely used and the American Laser Center and various other beauty hospitals are providing it to clients who want to permanently have body hair removed.
