Tattoos are a lasting design on the human body. The actual tattoo is created when pigment, referred to as tattoo ink, is injected into the dermal layer of the skin via ruptures in the skin’s top layer. The ink is inserted into the skin with an electrically powered tattoo gun that works much like a dentist’s drill or a sewing machine. The tattoo gun features a needle that punctures the epidermis between 55 and 3,200 times each minute. The needle punctures the epidermis about a millimeter and deposits a drop of ink into the skin along with every puncture.
